There is a need to further the focus of all occupational health services to include efforts to maintain professional competence and to prevent unforeseen circumstances in the workplace. This will require that certain occupational health services become more involved in promoting occupational health, without reducing the attention given to preventing accidents and diseases in the workplace. OHAs, through their close contact with employees, sometimes for many years, are in a good position to plan, deliver and evaluate health promotion and retention skills interventions in the workplace.

Occupational health promotion has become increasingly important over the past decade as employers and employees see appropriate benefits. Working people spend about half of their day off work and this provides a good opportunity for employees to share and receive a variety of health messages and for employers to create healthy workplaces. The scope of health promotion depends on the needs of each group.

Some of the most common activities to promote health are smoking cessation activities, healthy eating or exercise programs, prevention and reduction of drug and alcohol use.

However, health promotion can also be applied to other health, cultural and environmental sectors, if people in the company consider these factors to be important in improving their health, well-being and quality of life. In this context factors such as improving work order, incentives, reducing stress and fatigue, introducing flexible working hours, self-improvement programs and improving performance can also contribute to the overall health and well-being of a working society.
